July 2020 / The theory of polymer chemistry is 100 years old

It is a hundred years ago this year that German chemist Hermann Staudinger introduced his macromolecular hypothesis, making him one of the founders of polymer chemistry.
Until then, scientists could not really imagine what polymers were at the molecular level. In his research into the synthesis of isoprene, the monomeric natural rubber compound, Staudinger discovered that polymers are long chains of short, repeating molecular units attached to each other via covalent bonds.
With this he explained the high molecular weights that were found in polymers. A discovery that earned him the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1953. Thanks to the macromolecular hypothesis, applicable plastics such as PVC could be developed.

In 2019, more than 771,000 tons of depreciated PVC were recycled. This is stated in the VinylPlus Progress Report 2020 that was published Thursday June 4. The total number of tons of recycled PVC, 771,313 to be precise, is an increase of 4.3 percent compared to 2018. This is another step closer to the target of 800,000 tons of recycled PVC by 2020. VinylPlus calculated that with the recycling 1.5 million tons of CO2 emissions have been saved. Demand for recycled hard PVC remained very high. 47 percent of the recycled PVC comes from written-off window profiles (363,137 tons). More than 5 percent comes from written-off PVC pipes (approx. 40,000 tons). Due to reduced exports to China, more flexible PVC was also available in Europe last year for recycling.
